Sales Resume Guide

Sales is the one role where the resume is expected to be numbers. Which six to include, how to present a bad year, and what to do with no quota history.

Sales is the one role where nobody objects to a resume full of numbers. Most sales resumes still describe activities instead, which throws away the only advantage the field gives you.

The six numbers

For each role, in a consistent format so a reader can compare years at a glance.

Quota and attainment. The quota figure and the percentage achieved. Attainment without a quota is meaningless, and a quota without attainment is worse.

Ranking. Position within your team or region, with the team size. “Third of 22” is instantly interpretable.

Average deal size. This tells a hiring manager whether you sell at their price point, which determines whether your experience transfers at all.

Sales cycle length. A two-week cycle and a nine-month cycle are different jobs.

New versus existing. The split between new business and account management. Employers hire specifically for one.

Total revenue closed. Annual, and for the period as a whole if it helps.

Account Executive · Halstead Software · Denver, CO · 2022 to present Mid-market SaaS, new business, average deal $48k, 3 to 5 month cycle, quota $1.2m

  • 2025: 118% of quota, $1.42m closed, ranked 3rd of 22
  • 2024: 104% of quota, $1.25m closed
  • 2023: 96% of quota against a raised quota following a territory change

That block is a complete answer to what a sales manager wants to know.

Presenting a bad year

Do not omit it. In a numbers-led resume, a missing year is conspicuous and invites a worse assumption than the truth.

State it with the cause in one clause, no defensiveness:

  • 2023: 96% of quota against a raised quota following a territory change
  • 2022: 78% of quota during the product transition, which paused new licence sales for one quarter

Legitimate context includes territory changes, quota increases, product transitions, a market or sector event, a maternity or medical absence, and a long ramp on a new patch. Naming it once is credible; explaining at length is not.

What does not work: presenting only your best year and leaving the rest as a date range.

Segment and motion

The matching variables, and they matter more than most candidates think.

Segment: SMB, mid-market, enterprise, strategic. Selling to a ten-person business and a global corporation share almost nothing operationally.

Motion: inbound, outbound, channel and partner, field, inside, self-serve expansion.

Sales type: new business hunting, account management, renewals, expansion, retention.

Buyer: the function and seniority you sell to. Selling to IT directors is a different skill from selling to procurement or to clinicians.

Name these for each role. A candidate whose segment and motion match a posting will be preferred over one with better numbers in a different context.

Achievements beyond the quota line

The numbers get you shortlisted. These distinguish you from others who also hit quota.

  • Opened the healthcare vertical from nothing, closing the first four accounts and writing the pitch the team now uses
  • Landed the largest deal in company history at $340k, an eleven-month cycle with seven stakeholders
  • Mentored three new AEs through ramp, all of whom reached quota within two quarters
  • Rebuilt the discovery call structure after win-rate analysis, which the whole team adopted
  • Recovered a churning account worth $180k that had given notice

Sources people forget: opening a new segment or geography, mentoring, contributing to process or playbooks, unusually complex deals, and saving accounts.

Tools, named

A filter in most postings and cheap to include.

CRM by name: Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics, Pipedrive. Engagement platforms: Outreach, Salesloft, Apollo. Intelligence tools: ZoomInfo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Gong. Any CPQ or forecasting tool.

Also name methodologies you have genuinely worked in rather than merely heard of: MEDDIC, SPIN, Challenger, Sandler. Naming one you cannot discuss is a trap in a sales interview.

The O*NET profile for sales representatives is a useful cross-check on standard vocabulary if you are moving between industries.

With no sales experience

More transferable than most fields, because the underlying activity is common.

Use any role with a target or a persuasion element: retail with upselling figures, hospitality with average check, fundraising totals, recruitment placements, tutoring client acquisition, running your own small business.

Sales Assistant · Cascade Outdoor · Portland, OR · 2024 to 2026

  • Highest attachment rate on a team of nine, averaging roughly $28 in accessories per transaction
  • Ran the store’s loyalty sign-ups, adding about 40 members a week

Format

One page up to about ten years, two beyond. Numbers formatted identically in every role, since inconsistency makes comparison hard and comparison is the point.

Plain and single column. Use a professional template and check the document against a specific posting in the ATS checker.

Before negotiating, check the BLS wage statistics for your metro area, remembering that published figures may not fully reflect commission, which is most of the upside in this role.

Common questions

What numbers should be on a sales resume?

Quota and attainment percentage, ranking within your team, average deal size, sales cycle length, new versus existing business split, and total revenue closed.

How do I show quota attainment on a resume?

State the quota and the percentage achieved for each year, in a consistent format under each role. Attainment against a stated quota is the only figure that lets a reader compare candidates.

What if I missed quota one year?

State it with the context in one clause: a territory change, a product transition, a market event. Attempting to hide a year reads worse, because gaps in a numbers-led resume are conspicuous.

How do I write a sales resume with no sales experience?

Use any role with a measurable target or persuasion element: retail upselling, fundraising, recruitment, hospitality. Present the numbers you did have, then name what you are targeting.
