Where resume keywords actually come from

The best source of resume keywords is the job posting itself. It already contains the exact vocabulary the employer chose, which no external keyword list can improve on.

Read it three times. Once for hard requirements: named tools, certifications, systems, licences. Once for the verbs describing the work. Once for the employer's own word for things that have several names, such as clients versus customers, or tickets versus cases.

Placement beats frequency

Where a term appears matters more than how many times. A keyword in a skills list is an assertion. The same keyword inside a bullet that shows scope and outcome is evidence.

The strongest position is a job title line or an experience bullet with a result attached. The weakest is a header, footer or text box, where content is frequently lost during extraction, taking the keyword with it.

Tailor in fifteen minutes, not two hours

You do not need to rewrite the document for every application. Four changes usually cover it:

• Adjust the title line if the market title differs from your internal one.
• Rewrite two or three bullets in your most recent role to carry the posting's terms.
• Update the skills section so it reflects what those bullets now prove.
• Re-export and check the text still selects and copies in order.

The line between matching and stretching

Adding a skill you do not have in order to tailor a resume past a filter is a bad trade, because it works. You reach an interview built on a claim you cannot support.

There is a legitimate middle ground. If a posting names one tool and you have used two comparable ones, say what you have actually used. That is honest and demonstrates the transferable capability. Writing their tool because they wrote it is not.

Hidden text is the one unrecoverable mistake

White keywords on a white background, or terms tucked behind an image, are found routinely and read as deliberate deception rather than optimisation.
