What is happening under the hood

An AI resume builder takes what you type, plus a target role if you supply one, and produces phrasing that matches patterns it has learned from very large amounts of text.

Two consequences follow directly, and they explain almost every complaint about these tools.

First, it is a rewriting engine, not a research engine. It knows nothing about your career beyond what you enter. If your input is thin, the output will be confident and empty, because fluent generic text is exactly what the pattern-matching produces in the absence of specifics.

Second, it is optimising for plausibility. A number that fits the shape of a resume bullet is more likely to appear than a blank space, which is why invented metrics are the characteristic failure.

The four edits that matter

Delete every number you did not measure. This is the important one. A generated bullet claiming a percentage improvement is a liability the moment an interviewer asks how you calculated it.

Deflate the verbs. Generated output reaches for spearheaded, orchestrated and architected. Plain verbs are stronger: cut, built, ran, rewrote.

Break the rhythm. Models produce sentences of similar length and shape. Three bullets in a row with identical structure read as machine output even when every fact is true. Vary them deliberately.

Add the thing only you know. The detail that could not have been generated: the specific system, the awkward constraint, the reason the work was hard. This is what makes a bullet yours.

A worked pass

Generated: Spearheaded comprehensive process improvements resulting in a 35% increase in operational efficiency across key business functions.

After editing: Rewrote the shift handover after two years of losing the first hour of every night shift to catching up. Handover now takes ten minutes and the night lead starts on time.

The second is shorter on claims and much stronger, because it is checkable and specific. Note what happened to the 35%: it went, because it was never measured.

Where AI genuinely helps

It is very good at the blank page. Turning rough notes into a first structured draft removes the hardest part of the task for most people.

It is good at compression, cutting a rambling paragraph to a scannable line without losing meaning.

It is good at variation, offering five phrasings when you are stuck on one.

All three are drafting aids where you remain the editor. That is the correct relationship, and tools that try to remove you from it produce the worst output.

What it cannot do

It cannot know whether a claim is true. It cannot judge whether a piece of experience is relevant to a specific team. It cannot tell you that the role is wrong for you.

It also cannot guarantee anything about automated screening, because employers configure their own systems and no tool has visibility into them.
