How to Build a Resume Completely Free

Route one: a word processor

The most underrated option. Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages, with a plain single-column layout, produces a file that parses cleanly and costs nothing.

What you gain: total control over spacing, no account, no export limit, and a document you can edit forever.

What you give up: the tool will not stop you making layout mistakes. Avoid text boxes, avoid putting your name and contact details in the page header, and keep to one column. Those three rules cover most of what a builder would have enforced for you.

Save as PDF for sending, and keep the editable original.

Route two: open-source builders

There are genuinely free, open-source resume tools with no paid tier at all, some self-hosted and some offered as a hosted version.

They suit people comfortable with a little setup, and they have one real advantage beyond price: your data stays yours, which matters if your resume names a current employer or clients.

The trade is that templates are fewer and support is a community rather than a company.

Route three: free tiers that do not require a card

Some commercial builders let you produce and download a usable file without payment details. The way to find out is to test rather than to read the pricing page: create an account, enter one line, and try to export immediately.

If a download arrives without a watermark and without a card, that tier is genuinely free for your purposes. If it does not, you have lost two minutes rather than an afternoon.

Route four: the one you may already own

If you are a student or recent graduate, your institution very often provides career-service templates and review. If you are with a union or professional body, the same is frequently true. Public libraries in many places offer both software access and help.

These are free, human, and consistently forgotten.

The rules that matter more than the tool

Whatever route you take, the same handful of things decide whether the file works.

Single column. Real text, never an image of text. Standard headings such as Experience and Education. Nothing important inside a header, footer or text box. Bullets that say what changed, not what you were responsible for.

A free resume that follows those rules beats a paid one that does not.
