Customer Service Resume Guide
Support is the most measured job on most resumes and the least quantified. The six metrics worth citing, and how channel and tier change what to lead with.

Customer service is among the most heavily measured jobs there is, and support resumes are among the least quantified. That gap is the whole opportunity.
The six metrics worth citing
Your employer tracked most of these. Find them before you leave, or approximate honestly.
Volume. Tickets, calls or chats per day or per week.
Satisfaction. CSAT percentage, NPS, or star rating, with the team average for comparison if you know it.
First contact resolution. The proportion you closed without escalating.
Average handle time, and whether you were above or below team average. Lower is not always better, so say which direction was good in your context.
Quality assurance scores. If your calls were scored, that number is direct evidence of quality.
Retention or save rate, if you handled cancellations. This is a revenue number and it is the strongest thing you can put on a support resume.
Customer Service Representative · Halstead Utilities · Denver, CO · 2022 to present Inbound phone and email, roughly 60 contacts a day, billing and account queries
- Maintained CSAT of 94% against a team average of 88%
- First contact resolution around 82%, highest on a team of 14
- QA score averaging 96% across eight quarterly reviews
That is a different document from one saying “provided excellent customer service”.
Channel and tier
Two facts that determine which vacancies you match.
Channel: inbound phone, outbound, email, live chat, social media, in-person, technical support. Chat and phone are genuinely different skills, and employers staff specific channels.
Tier: tier one general enquiries, tier two technical or escalation, complaints and resolution, retention, back office. If you handled escalations, say so, because escalation work is a distinct capability.
Name both for each role. Also worth stating: whether you worked to a script or with discretion, and whether the volume was consumer or business.
Achievements beyond the metrics
Numbers get you shortlisted. These get you hired.
Weak: Answered customer enquiries, resolved complaints, processed orders, maintained records, worked as part of a team.
Strong:
- Wrote the knowledge base articles for the top ten billing queries, which cut those tickets by roughly a third
- Became the team’s escalation point for meter disputes, handling about 15 a week
- Trained six new representatives during two intakes and wrote the shadowing checklist
- Spotted a recurring billing error affecting roughly 400 accounts and raised it with the product team
- Held the retention line for three months, saving about 60% of cancellation calls
The fourth bullet is the kind that distinguishes someone who thinks from someone who processes. Noticing a pattern across many contacts is exactly the quality a support manager wants and it never appears on resumes.
Systems, named
A hard filter in most postings, so be specific.
Ticketing and CRM: Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud, Freshdesk, Intercom, HubSpot, ServiceNow, Jira Service Management.
Telephony: the platform by name, plus whether you used a predictive dialler.
Other: order management or billing systems, chat platforms, internal knowledge bases, and any workforce management tool.
Also list languages spoken with an honest level, since bilingual support staff are in demand and it is often a premium.
The O*NET profile for customer service representatives is a useful cross-check on standard vocabulary.
With no direct experience
Any role dealing with the public counts, and the framing is what matters.
Retail, hospitality, tutoring, volunteering on a helpline, a front desk shift, coaching. Write them with volume and outcomes rather than as duties.
Sales Assistant · Cascade Grocery · Portland, OR · 2024 to 2026
- Served roughly 200 customers a shift on the till and the service desk
- Handled returns and complaints at the service desk, escalating about two a week
- Covered the customer phone line during staff shortages
That is customer service experience. Presenting it as retail work undersells it. See the teenager resume guide and the student resume guide.
Where support leads
Worth shaping your resume around, because support is a common route into better-paid work.
The usual progressions: team lead, quality assurance, training, customer success, account management, technical support, operations, and product or user research.
Each is reached by taking on something adjacent. If you want customer success, take the renewal conversations. If you want product, be the person who documents recurring faults. Then put that work in its own bullet.
Format
One page up to about eight years. Plain and single column, since this is a high-volume role screened mechanically. Use a simple template and check the document against a specific posting in the ATS checker.
Before applying, check the BLS wage statistics for your metro area, where the spread between consumer call centre work and specialist business support is wide.

Common questions
What metrics should be on a customer service resume?
Ticket or call volume, CSAT or NPS, first contact resolution, average handle time, quality assurance scores, and retention or save rate if you handled cancellations.
How do I write a customer service resume with no experience?
Any role involving the public counts: retail, hospitality, volunteering, tutoring. Write it with volume and outcomes rather than as duties, and name the systems you have used.
Does the support channel matter on a resume?
Yes. Phone, email, live chat, social and in-person are different skills, and employers hire for the channel they are staffing. Say which you have done and at what volume.
What is the most common customer service resume mistake?
Writing about being passionate about helping people instead of citing the numbers. Support is measured constantly, so the data exists and almost nobody uses it.
