Kazifi guide card: building a resume online step by step

Most advice on how to make a resume online free compares tools. This is about the build itself, in the order that avoids doing the work twice.

1 2 3 4
The order matters: gathering before formatting is the biggest single time saving.

Step 1: Gather before you open anything

Write a rough list somewhere plain first: employers, titles, dates, and for each role three or four things you actually did with any outcome you remember.

Doing this inside a builder is slower, because you end up formatting while thinking. Separating the remembering from the writing is the single biggest time saving in the process.

Step 2: Pick a plain template deliberately

Choose the plainest layout the tool offers for now. Not because plain is always right, but because a plain layout shows you how much content you really have.

Ornate templates hide length. You fill the decorative space, then discover the content does not survive a switch to something simpler.

Step 3: Write the most recent role in full

Start here, not at the top of the page. This role sets the standard: if you write four strong bullets here, you know what a bullet should look like everywhere else.

Each bullet should say what you did and what changed as a result. Open with a plain verb, keep it to about a line and a half, and stop when the point is made.

Weak: Responsible for managing the daily stock counts.

Better: Ran daily stock counts across two aisles and rebuilt the count sheet, which cut the recount rate.

Step 4: Work backwards, tapering

Earlier roles get progressively fewer bullets. A job from ten years ago rarely needs more than a line or two, and a job from twenty may need only the title, employer and dates.

The taper is what signals seniority. A page where every role has five bullets reads as undifferentiated.

Step 5: Skills, honestly

List what you would be comfortable being tested on. Skills that already appear inside your bullets are the ones worth listing, because the bullets are the evidence.

Resist the urge to list every tool you have opened. A long list dilutes the ones that matter and invites a question you would rather not have.

Step 6: Write the summary last

Now that the page exists, the summary is easy: two or three lines saying what you do, at what scale, and what you are looking for. Written first, it is guesswork. Written last, it is a description of the page beneath it.

Step 7: Fit the page

This is where most of the frustration lives. In order of what to try: reduce section spacing, then line height, then margins, then cut the weakest bullet from your oldest role. Font size last, because dropping below about ten and a half points costs readability.

If it will not fit, the answer is almost always cutting an old role rather than shrinking everything.

The final check: exported text must select, copy and arrive in a sensible order.

Step 8: Export and verify

Export a PDF, open it outside the builder, and check three things.

Does it match the preview? Can you select the body text and copy it? Does the copied text come out in a sensible order?

If text will not select, the file is an image and automated readers cannot see any of your work. That check takes twenty seconds and is the most valuable step in the process.

Our AI resume builder follows this sequence, the resume checker handles step eight, and the template gallery is where to reconsider the design at the end.

Gather, write the recent role, taper backwards, summarise last, verify the export. You can build your resume free in that order.

Common questions

What should I write first on a resume?

Your most recent role, in full. It sets the tone and length for everything else, and the summary is much easier to write once it exists.

How long does building a resume take?

A focused first draft takes about two hours. Most of the time people report is spent switching between the template and the wording rather than writing.

Should I pick the template first or last?

Pick a plain one first so you can see length, then reconsider design at the end. Choosing a design first tends to make you write to fill it.

When is a resume finished?

When every bullet says what changed, nothing important sits in a header or text box, and the exported text can be selected and read in order.
