Investment Banking Resume Guide
Banking has the most rigid resume conventions in professional work. The expected format, how to write a deal list, and what to do when deals are confidential.
Kazifi Careers Team · Careers & ATS specialists
Investment banking has the most conventional resume expectations in professional work, and deviation reads as not knowing the industry. The good news is that conventions are easy to follow once stated.
The format, which is not negotiable
One page. At analyst and associate level this is genuinely enforced, not a guideline.
Four sections in this order: Education, Experience, Skills, and optionally Additional or Leadership.
Education first, even a few years in, until you are firmly at associate level or beyond. This is the opposite of general advice and correct for this field.
Dense but plain. Small margins, 10 to 10.5 point, no colour, no design. A designed banking resume signals a candidate who has not spoken to anyone in the industry.
Reverse chronological within each section.
Education, with the numbers
Banking recruiting screens on academics more heavily than almost any other field, so include what you would omit elsewhere.
University of Denver, Daniels College of Business · Denver, CO · May 2026 BSBA, Finance and Accounting · GPA 3.81/4.00 · SAT 1520 Relevant coursework: Corporate Valuation, Financial Modelling, Advanced Accounting Dean’s List, six semesters · Investment Club, Vice President
Include GPA at analyst and early associate level. Include test scores if strong. Include honours. See GPA on a resume for the general rule and note that banking is the standing exception to it.
The deal list
The centre of an experienced banking resume, and the part with real conventions.
Format each as transaction type, sector, size, your contribution and outcome.
Halstead Partners · Analyst, Consumer & Retail · Denver, CO · Jul 2024 to present
- $340m sale of a specialty food manufacturer to a strategic buyer: built the operating model and LBO, ran the diligence data room, drafted the CIM. Closed Mar 2026.
- $180m minority recapitalisation for a regional grocery chain: led the comparable company and precedent transaction analysis, prepared the management presentation. Closed Nov 2025.
- $1.1bn divestiture of a beverage division (live): building the carve-out model and coordinating four workstreams with the client’s finance team.
What makes those work: the size, the specific analytical contribution, and the outcome. Not “assisted senior bankers on M&A transactions”, which describes every analyst.
Where deals are confidential, describe them generically without naming parties: “$340m sale of a specialty food manufacturer to a strategic buyer”. That is standard practice and nobody expects a client name.
Where deals did not close, say so. “Terminated during diligence” or “on hold” is honest and normal. A live deal is legitimate experience. Presenting an unclosed transaction as completed is the type of error that ends a candidacy at reference or interview stage.
The technical contribution, specifically
Interviewers select from your bullets, so be precise about what you actually built.
Useful specifics: operating models, three-statement models, LBO models, DCF, accretion and dilution analysis, comparable company and precedent transaction analysis, sum of the parts, merger models, waterfall and returns analysis, carve-out and pro forma work.
Then process contributions: CIM and management presentation drafting, diligence coordination, data room management, buyer or investor outreach lists, expert calls.
Avoid claiming to have led anything you supported. Banking hierarchies are well understood and inflated seniority is transparent to anyone in the field.
Skills, short
Skills: Financial modelling (three-statement, LBO, DCF), Capital IQ, FactSet, Bloomberg, PitchBook, Excel, VBA, Spanish (fluent)
Name the data platforms, because they are a genuine filter. Include languages with an honest level, since cross-border coverage groups value them.
Do not list Microsoft Office generally. Do not rate yourself out of ten.
Additional and leadership
Worth keeping for one or two lines, and it does real work in banking recruiting, where interviewers look for evidence of drive outside academics.
Sport at a competitive level, a society you ran, a business you started, military service, a genuinely unusual interest. Keep it to a line, keep it truthful, and expect to be asked about it, because in a technical interview this is often the human question.
Breaking in from outside
Two realistic routes, and both need the format above regardless.
From another finance function, such as accounting, valuation, transaction services or corporate development. Lead with any transaction exposure and any modelling you have genuinely built. Name deals you supported even indirectly.
Through an MBA or a master’s in finance, which is the standard mid-career entry and comes with its own recruiting cycle.
In both cases the honest framing is better than the aspirational one. See how to change careers.
The O*NET profile for financial and investment analysts covers general occupational vocabulary, though banking’s own conventions matter more here than standard terminology.
Format check
One page, plain, single column, exported as PDF with a real text layer. Use a professional template and check the document against a specific posting in the resume checker.
Banking recruiting also runs to an unusually early and rigid calendar, so track deadlines carefully in the application tracker. A perfect resume submitted after a cycle closes is worth nothing.
Check the BLS wage statistics for context, noting that published wage figures capture base pay far better than the bonus component, which is most of the compensation at senior levels. See best paying jobs for what the pay is compensating for.

Common questions
How long should an investment banking resume be?
One page, without exception, at analyst and associate level. Banking is the field where the one-page convention is genuinely enforced rather than merely recommended.
How do I write a deal list?
Transaction type, sector, size, your role, and the outcome, one line each. Where a deal is confidential, describe it generically by sector and size without naming the parties.
Do I include my GPA on a banking resume?
Yes, at analyst and early associate level, along with test scores if strong. Banking recruiting screens on academics far more than most fields.
What if my deals never closed?
Say so plainly. Deals fail for many reasons and a live process you worked is legitimate experience. Describing an unclosed deal as completed is the kind of error that ends a candidacy.
