Finance Resume Guide

Finance covers FP&A, accounting, treasury and controlling, each screened differently. How to state scope, and why systems experience is the strongest filter.

Finance is four or five different functions under one heading, and the resume that works in one reads as unfocused in another. Two things fix most finance resumes: stating scope, and naming systems.

Which finance function

Read the posting and identify which of these it is.

FP&A. Budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, business partnering. Evidence: forecast accuracy, planning cycle time, decisions influenced.

Accounting and controlling. Close, reconciliation, technical accounting, audit. Evidence: close timelines, audit outcomes, control improvements.

Treasury. Cash, liquidity, funding, FX, banking relationships. Evidence: facility sizes, cash forecasting accuracy, cost of funds.

Corporate development and investment. Valuation, diligence, transactions. Evidence: deals, values, outcomes. See the investment banking resume guide.

Commercial and revenue finance. Pricing, margin, contract analysis. Evidence: margin improvement, pricing decisions.

Then lead with the matching one. A resume equally weighted across all five reads as a person with no specialism, which in finance is a weakness rather than versatility.

Scope is the calibration number

The thing that lets a reader place you, and the thing most finance resumes omit.

Senior Financial Analyst · Halstead Foods · Denver, CO · 2022 to present FP&A for the retail division, $340m revenue, four business units, reporting to the divisional CFO

State the number that fits your function: revenue supported, budget owned, portfolio value, transaction sizes, entity count, headcount of the finance team, or number of legal entities consolidated.

Two analysts can both write “prepared monthly forecasts”. One did it for a $5m business, one for a $2bn one. Nothing else on the page distinguishes them.

Outcomes, not the reporting calendar

The characteristic weakness of finance resumes: describing the recurring cycle, which is defined by the role.

Weak: Prepared monthly management accounts, performed variance analysis, supported the annual budget process, produced ad hoc reporting for management, assisted with year-end audit.

Strong:

  • Rebuilt the divisional forecast model, taking the monthly cycle from nine days to four and cutting forecast error on revenue by about a third
  • Found and corrected a rebate accrual error that had understated cost by roughly $800k across two quarters
  • Led the automation of the intercompany reconciliation across seven entities, removing about 30 hours a month of manual work
  • Built the unit economics model that supported closing two underperforming sites
  • Took the close from day 12 to day 7 over three quarters by resequencing the accruals process

Every strong bullet has a mechanism and a consequence. Use real figures only, since finance interviewers will ask exactly how a number was derived.

Systems, which is the hard filter

Name every one. This is where finance hiring filters most aggressively, because system familiarity is a large real onboarding cost.

ERP: SAP (and which modules), Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics, Workday Financials, Sage. Planning: Anaplan, Adaptive Insights, Hyperion, Pigment, OneStream. Reporting and data: Power BI, Tableau, and Excel at a level you can describe honestly. Other: the consolidation tool, the treasury management system, the procurement platform, SQL if you have it.

Two specific notes. Excel skill claims are worthless unless specific, so say what you actually build: models with scenario switches, Power Query transformations, or whatever it genuinely is. And SQL is increasingly a differentiator in finance, so if you have it, say so plainly.

Credentials, stated precisely

Credentials: CPA, Colorado, active · CFA Level II candidate, passed Levels I and II · MBA, University of Denver, 2020

Be exact. “CFA” when you have passed two levels is a misrepresentation that will be caught. Candidate status stated properly is respected; overstated status is fatal.

Include the state for a CPA. Include exam dates for anything in progress.

Industry matters more than in most fields

Worth knowing when you target roles.

Regulated industries, banking, insurance, healthcare and utilities have technical accounting and reporting requirements that take real time to learn, so prior industry experience is valued highly. Name your industry for each role.

If you are changing industry, lead with the function and name the transferable technical work, then acknowledge the domain gap directly. Employers accept a stated learning curve more readily than an implied claim of familiarity. See best paying careers for why industry moves are often the better paid option.

Format

One page up to about ten years, two beyond. Plain, single column, conservative typography. Finance is a field where a decorated resume actively counts against you.

Use a professional template and check the document against a specific posting in the ATS checker, since large employers and recruitment firms in finance screen heavily on system and credential keywords.

Check the BLS wage statistics for your metro area, where the spread across industries for the same finance function is wide.

Common questions

What should a finance resume include?

The scope you were responsible for in dollars, the systems you used by name, your credentials, and what changed because of your work rather than the reports you produced.

How do I show scope on a finance resume?

State the revenue, budget, portfolio or entity count you were responsible for, under each role. Without it a reader cannot tell whether you supported a $2m business unit or a $2bn one.

Which finance credentials matter most?

CPA for accounting and controlling, CFA for investment work, CMA for management accounting. State the status precisely, including candidate status and how many levels you have passed.

Is ERP experience important on a finance resume?

It is one of the strongest filters. Naming SAP, Oracle, NetSuite or whichever system you have used removes a real onboarding cost and employers search on it.
