Security hiring filters on licence first and post experience second. The thing that actually gets a good guard promoted, report writing, is almost never visible on a resume.

Most states require registration or licensure for guard work, with additional requirements for armed positions, and the specifics differ considerably. Name exactly what you hold, with expiry, and state clearly whether you are armed or unarmed, since employers filter on it before anything else.

If you hold a firearms endorsement, state it with its own expiry. If you hold a federal clearance, state the level and status, since it is one of the most valuable things on the page.

Post type is the matching variable

Different posts are genuinely different jobs, and employers hire on prior familiarity.

Corporate and lobby. Access control, visitor management, badge systems, executive presence.

Retail and loss prevention. Surveillance, apprehension procedure, evidence handling, working with police.

Hospital. De-escalation, behavioural health incidents, restraint policy, patient and visitor management.

School and campus. Safeguarding, drills, working with staff and parents.

Construction and industrial. Site access, equipment security, safety compliance.

Event. Crowd management, bag checks, ejections.

Data centre and critical infrastructure. Strict access protocol, logging, escort procedure.

That context line tells a supervisor whether you can handle their site.

Report writing, demonstrated

The differentiator nobody uses.

Supervisors’ most common complaint about guards is report quality, because a poorly written incident report creates legal and insurance exposure. So evidence that you write clearly is worth more than another year of patrol experience.

How to show it:

• Wrote roughly 200 incident reports over two years, used by risk management without amendment
• Rewrote the site’s incident report template to capture required detail, adopted across three posts
• Gave evidence in two court proceedings arising from site incidents

And show it implicitly by writing your resume well. A security resume with typos and inconsistent formatting is a live demonstration of the problem the supervisor is worried about.

Achievements, not the post orders

Weak: Patrolled premises, monitored CCTV, controlled access, wrote reports, responded to alarms, provided excellent customer service.

Strong:

• De-escalated roughly 40 behavioural health incidents in the emergency department over two years with no use-of-force reports
• Identified a recurring loading dock access gap and proposed the fix adopted at all three sites
• Trained nine new officers on post orders and report writing as field training officer
• Maintained a clean audit record across four unannounced client inspections
• Cut false alarm callouts by roughly half by retraining the night cleaning contractor on the alarm procedure

The de-escalation figure is the kind of thing that distinguishes a hospital-experienced officer immediately, and the use-of-force point is what a risk manager cares about.

Systems and technical skills

Name what you have used: CCTV and video management systems, access control platforms, alarm monitoring systems, incident reporting software, guard tour and patrol verification systems, metal detection and screening equipment, radio protocol.

Also worth listing: first aid, CPR and AED, de-escalation or crisis intervention training, fire warden or life safety training, and any defensive tactics certification.

Safety and emergency procedure in commercial premises is regulated, and familiarity with the requirements OSHA publishes in its standards and enforcement material is worth signalling, particularly for industrial and construction posts.

Background history must be complete

Security hiring involves thorough background checks, so accuracy matters more than presentation.

List every relevant job with accurate dates. Account for gaps plainly in one line. Do not omit a role that ended badly, because omissions surface at verification and cost more than the original problem.

Military and law enforcement experience is a strong asset here. Translate it into civilian terms: what you guarded, what you were responsible for, what you handled, rather than unit designations and rank abbreviations a civilian reader will not know.

Format

Check the BLS wage statistics for your area, since armed, clearance-holding and specialist posts pay well above general guard work and the spread is wide.
