Phlebotomist Resume Guide

A lab manager reading phlebotomy resumes is looking for three things, and two of them almost never appear. Getting them onto the page is most of the work.

The credential block

Under your contact details, with issuing body and expiry.

Certification requirements are set state by state, and a small number of states require it specifically while most employers prefer it. Several national bodies certify phlebotomists, so name yours precisely rather than writing “certified phlebotomist” without a source.

If certification is in progress, name the exam date. If your state requires a specific licence, state that you hold it.

Draw volume, which is the headline number

The single most useful figure on a phlebotomy resume and the one most often missing.

Volume tells a manager whether you can handle their throughput. It is checkable, it is unambiguous, and it differentiates immediately from a resume that says “performed venipunctures”.

Give a realistic range rather than a single figure, and do not inflate it. This is a number that gets discussed at interview.

Difficult populations

The second thing they screen for, and what actually separates experience levels.

Name the ones you genuinely handle: paediatric and infant draws, geriatric and fragile veins, oncology patients, dialysis patients, patients with a history of difficult access, bariatric patients, combative or confused patients, and neonatal heel sticks.

• Perform paediatric draws from infants upward, roughly 10 a day in the children’s clinic

Anyone can draw from an easy antecubital vein. Being the person called when two attempts have failed is a distinct skill and it should be visible.

The setting

Different settings mean different work, and prior familiarity saves onboarding.

Hospital inpatient rounds, outpatient draw station, reference laboratory, physician office, plasma or blood donation centre, mobile and home draws, long-term care, occupational health screening.

Name it for each role. Mobile and home draw experience in particular is worth stating, since it demonstrates working unsupervised.

Achievements, not the procedure list

Weak: Performed venipunctures and capillary punctures, labelled specimens, maintained equipment, followed safety protocols, provided patient care.

Strong:

• Trained four new phlebotomists on paediatric technique and specimen handling
• Cut morning round turnaround by about 20 minutes by resequencing the floor order with the lab
• Took on the difficult-access referrals for the outpatient station, roughly 8 to 10 a day
• Rebuilt the tray stocking checklist after repeated shortages
• No specimen rejections attributed to collection error across the last two years

That last one is worth including only if it is true and your lab actually tracked it. Specimen integrity is what a lab manager worries about most, so honest evidence on it is valuable.

Safety and compliance

Worth a short section, because this is a regulated environment and an employer needs confidence.

Name your bloodborne pathogens training with a date, any OSHA training, and your familiarity with sharps safety and exposure control procedures. OSHA publishes the standards and enforcement information that govern this, and being visibly conversant with the requirements is a genuine asset rather than a formality.

Also worth stating: order of draw knowledge, chain of custody handling if you have done drug screen collections, and any experience with specimen processing and centrifugation.

Systems

Name the lab information system and the EHR. Epic Beaker, Cerner, Sunquest, LabCorp or Quest systems. Also any specimen labelling and positive patient identification system you have used.

This is a filter in most postings and it takes one line.

If you are newly certified

You have more than you think, and the numbers are recorded.

Training programmes log supervised draws. Use that figure. Name the settings you rotated through and the populations you drew from during clinicals.

One page, plain, single column, simple template. Check the document against a specific posting in the resume checker, since hospital systems and reference labs screen at volume.

Check the BLS wage statistics for your metro area before applying, as pay varies notably between reference labs, hospitals and donation centres.
