Dental Assistant Resume Guide

State permits and expanded functions decide what you can legally do, so they decide your resume's top section. Plus how to write chairside work as evidence.

What a dental assistant may legally do differs substantially from state to state, and it hinges on permits rather than experience. That makes your credential block the most important part of the page.

Permits and certifications first

Directly under your contact details, before anything else.

Credentials: Registered Dental Assistant, Colorado · CDA (DANB), certified through 2028 · Radiography certification (state) · Expanded functions: coronal polishing, sealants, topical fluoride · BLS (AHA, exp 05/2027)

Why this matters more than in most roles: a practice needs to know exactly which procedures you can perform before they can assess you at all. Someone permitted to take radiographs and place sealants is a different hire from someone who is not, regardless of years of experience.

The Dental Assisting National Board administers the national certification most employers recognise, and state requirements for radiography and expanded functions sit with each state’s dental board. List both layers separately so nobody has to infer.

If a permit is in progress, say so with a date.

Name your expanded functions explicitly

This is the section that gets skipped and it is worth real money.

Depending on your state and permits, expanded functions can include coronal polishing, sealant placement, topical fluoride and anaesthetic application, placing and removing temporary restorations, taking impressions, and orthodontic procedures.

List the ones you actually hold. A practice reads this as a list of things they will not have to do themselves, which directly affects their scheduling.

State the specialty

Workflows differ enough between dental specialties that prior familiarity is a genuine hiring advantage.

General practice, paediatric, orthodontic, oral surgery, endodontic, periodontal, prosthodontic. Name it for every role, and lead with the one that matches the posting.

Dental Assistant · Brennan Family Dentistry · Boulder, CO · 2022 to present Four-chair general practice, three dentists and one hygienist, roughly 30 patients a day, heavy restorative and crown and bridge mix

That context line answers most of what an office manager wants to know.

Chairside work as evidence

The bullets on most dental assistant resumes describe the job description. What differentiates is what changed.

Weak: Assisted dentist during procedures, sterilised instruments, took X-rays, prepared treatment rooms, scheduled appointments.

Strong:

  • Ran four-handed chairside for two dentists across roughly 30 patients a day
  • Rebuilt the sterilisation and instrument turnaround process, cutting room changeover from about 12 minutes to 7
  • Trained three new assistants on the practice’s crown and bridge setup
  • Took over recall calls and lifted hygiene reappointment from roughly 60% to over 80% across a year
  • Became the practice’s Dentrix lead during the 2024 upgrade

Note that two of those are administrative. In small practices assistants often carry front-office work, and it is worth claiming because it makes you more valuable rather than less specialised.

Use real figures or none.

Software and equipment

Name the practice management software. Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, Curve. Offices filter on it because it removes a training cost.

Then name the equipment you have used: digital radiography systems, panoramic and cephalometric imaging, intraoral cameras, cone beam, CAD/CAM systems such as a milling unit, and any specific scanner. Digital scanning experience in particular is worth stating, since practices adopting it want people who have already used one.

The O*NET profile for dental assistants is a useful cross-check on standard task vocabulary.

Radiation safety and infection control

Worth a short line, because both are regulatory matters an employer has to be confident about.

State your radiography certification, any infection control training, and OSHA or bloodborne pathogens training with dates. In a small practice, being the person who keeps the sterilisation log and the spore testing current is a real contribution and a legitimate resume item.

Format and length

One page. Section order: contact, credentials block, expanded functions, experience with specialty context lines, software and equipment, education and training programme.

Keep it plain, single column, simple template. Larger dental groups screen through the same software as anyone else, so check the document against a specific posting in the resume checker.

Before applying, check the BLS wage statistics for your metro area. Pay in this role varies with permits held and specialty, so read the percentile spread rather than the average.

Common questions

What certifications should be on a dental assistant resume?

Your state permit or registration, any national certification such as the CDA, radiography certification, expanded function permits, and BLS. All at the top, since they determine what you can legally perform.

Does a dental assistant need to be certified?

Requirements are set state by state and vary considerably, particularly for taking radiographs and for expanded functions. Check your own state board, and state clearly on your resume what you are permitted to do.

What should a dental assistant resume emphasise?

Which permits you hold, which specialties you have worked in, the practice management software you know, and chairside volume. Specialty familiarity saves a practice onboarding time.

How long should a dental assistant resume be?

One page at nearly every experience level. Two pages in this role usually means duties are being listed rather than achievements.
