HR Resume Guide
HR covers six specialisms screened differently, and your resume is read by people who screen resumes professionally. What that changes, and the numbers to use.

There is one thing unusual about writing an HR resume: it will be read by people who screen resumes for a living. Every weak convention you use will be recognised as one.
Which HR specialism
Six broad areas, screened for different evidence.
HR business partner or generalist. Supporting a business unit across the whole employee lifecycle. Evidence: headcount supported, manager coaching, retention, organisational change.
Talent acquisition. Evidence: roles filled, time to fill, offer acceptance, source mix, quality of hire.
Compensation and benefits. Evidence: population covered, benchmarking cycles, plan design, cost.
Employee relations. Evidence: case volume, resolution times, investigation outcomes, tribunal or complaint record.
Learning and development. Evidence: programmes designed, participation, completion, measurable capability change.
HR operations and systems. Evidence: implementations, process automation, data accuracy, service levels.
Lead with the matching one. A resume presenting all six equally reads as a person without depth, which in HR is read as junior rather than versatile.
Scale, which nobody states
The HR equivalent of scope, and it is routinely missing.
HR Business Partner · Halstead Foods · Denver, CO · 2022 to present Supporting the retail division, 1,400 employees across 18 sites in four states, partnering three directors and roughly 60 managers
Useful figures: headcount supported, number of locations, number of managers you partnered, union or non-union environment, states or countries covered, and the HR team size.
Supporting 40 people in one office and 1,400 across four states are different jobs. The title conceals it and the reader cannot guess.
Multi-state coverage is worth stating explicitly, because employment law varies by state and prior multi-state experience is a real asset.
Outcomes, with real numbers
Weak: Managed the full employee lifecycle, advised managers on HR policy, handled employee relations issues, supported recruitment, maintained HR records.
Strong:
- Cut time to fill for store manager roles from 68 days to 41 by rebuilding the interview process and adding a structured scorecard
- Handled roughly 45 employee relations cases a year across 18 sites, with two escalating beyond internal resolution
- Redesigned the onboarding programme, which took 90-day voluntary turnover from about 22% to 13% over a year
- Led the Workday implementation for the division, migrating 1,400 employee records with a data accuracy check before go-live
- Trained 60 managers on the new performance conversation framework across three quarters
Use real figures. HR readers know what plausible metrics look like and will notice an implausible one immediately.
Systems, named
A strong filter, because HRIS familiarity is a substantial onboarding cost.
HRIS and payroll: Workday, SuccessFactors, Oracle HCM, BambooHR, ADP, Paycom, UKG. ATS: Greenhouse, Lever, Workday Recruiting, iCIMS, Taleo, SmartRecruiters. Other: engagement survey platforms, LMS, compensation benchmarking tools, case management systems.
Name the modules where relevant, since Workday Core HCM and Workday Recruiting are different competencies.
Certification, precisely stated
Certification: SHRM-SCP, certified through 2028 · SHRM-CP, 2021
The two most widely recognised US credentials come from SHRM and HRCI. Employers search on the exact designation, so write it exactly rather than “SHRM certified”.
State the level accurately. The senior designations are distinct credentials, not upgrades you can imply.
Compliance knowledge, shown not claimed
The characteristic HR resume weakness: claiming knowledge of employment law without evidence.
Instead of “strong knowledge of employment law”, show it:
- Rewrote the division’s accommodation process after a review, including manager guidance and a documented decision trail
- Ran the annual pay equity review across 1,400 employees and presented findings to the divisional leadership team
- Managed three investigations to conclusion, each documented to the standard required for external review
The substantive framework matters here, and the EEOC’s material on prohibited employment policies and practices is the reference point most US HR work is measured against. Demonstrating that you work to it is more persuasive than asserting familiarity.
Written for a professional screener
Since your reader screens resumes for a living, a few things carry extra weight.
Get the mechanics perfect: consistent dates, consistent punctuation, no typos. An HR resume with formatting inconsistency undermines the claim to attention to detail more than in any other field.
Cut every generic phrase. “Passionate about people” and “strategic business partner” are the exact phrases HR readers see hundreds of times a week.
And keep the format plainly parseable, because you know better than most what happens to a document in a tracking system. See ATS resume templates.

Common questions
What should an HR resume include?
Your specialism, the headcount and locations you supported, the HRIS you have used by name, your certification, and outcomes such as time to fill, retention or case resolution.
Which HR certification is worth having?
SHRM and HRCI credentials are the two most widely recognised in the US. State which you hold with the exact designation, since employers filter on the specific letters.
How do I quantify HR work?
Headcount supported, time to fill, offer acceptance rate, turnover and retention, case volume and resolution time, and participation rates for programmes you ran.
Does the HR generalist versus specialist distinction matter?
Considerably. Generalist business partner roles and specialist roles in talent, compensation, benefits or relations are screened for different evidence, so match the posting.
