Essential Tips for Working From Home

Doing the work well once you have it: a setup that does not hurt, a routine that holds, and the burnout pattern remote workers hit around month four.

Advice on how to make money working from home almost always stops at getting the work. The harder part is the six months afterwards, when the setup that seemed fine starts causing problems.

Fix the chair before anything else

The most common mistake is spending on a monitor, a keyboard and a webcam while working from a dining chair.

Your chair determines whether you can still work comfortably at month six. Height matters more than price: feet flat, thighs roughly parallel to the floor, screen top at about eye level. A cushion and a stack of books under a laptop solves more than most purchases.

The second priority is light. A window in front of you rather than behind, so you are lit rather than silhouetted, which also fixes most video call complaints without buying anything.

Boundaries beat discipline

Remote productivity problems are usually boundary problems wearing a productivity costume.

Define the end, not just the start. Everyone sets a start time. Almost nobody sets a finish, which is why the day quietly expands. A hard stop is the single most effective change most remote workers make.

Create a commute substitute. A walk, a coffee, ten minutes of something unrelated at each end. The commute you lost was doing psychological work, and removing it without replacement is why the day runs together at both ends.

Separate the space if you possibly can. A room is ideal, a corner works, a specific chair used only for work is better than nothing. Working from bed is the reliable route to sleeping badly and working badly.

The month-four pattern

Remote burnout has a recognisable shape and a predictable timing. The first weeks feel excellent. Somewhere around month three or four, three things compound: the day has expanded at both ends, contact with other people has quietly dropped to near zero, and the boundary between work and rest has dissolved.

The tell is not exhaustion. It is that finishing has become hard to do deliberately, and that you cannot remember the last conversation that was not about work.

The interventions that work are unglamorous: a fixed finish time you actually keep, one scheduled non-work contact per week, and leaving the house daily even when there is no reason to.

Communication changes shape

In an office you are seen working. Remotely you are seen only through output and messages, which means the same performance reads as less unless you adjust.

Say what you are working on before it is finished, not only after. Reply visibly rather than only usefully, because silence reads as absence. Be explicit about your hours so nobody has to guess whether a late reply means you are busy or gone.

None of this is politics. It is replacing the incidental signals an office provides for free.

If you are self-employed rather than employed

Two extra things matter, and both are boring enough that people skip them until they cause a problem.

Set aside tax as it arrives, in a separate account, rather than reconciling later. Freelance income arrives gross and the bill is not optional.

Track your hours even when nobody requires it. It is the only way to discover your real effective rate, which is almost always lower than the headline rate once admin, invoicing and chasing payment are counted.

For finding the work in the first place, see legitimate ways to earn money from home and building consistent income from home. For a remote job rather than self-employment, see best job search sites for remote roles. Before accepting any offer, see the screening checklist.

Our resume checker gets your file ready for remote applications, and the application tracker keeps the search organised.

Sort the chair, define the finish, and schedule the contact. You can build a resume for remote roles while you set the rest up.

Common questions

How do I stay productive working from home?

Fix the start and the end of the day rather than policing the middle. Most remote productivity problems are actually boundary problems, and an unclear finish is worse than an unclear start.

What do I actually need to work from home?

A chair at the right height, a screen at eye level, and a door or a defined corner. Everything else is optional. Most people over-invest in equipment and under-invest in the chair.

Why is working from home tiring?

Usually because the working day expands without commute boundaries at either end, and because unstructured availability means never fully switching off rather than working more hours.

How do I avoid isolation when working remotely?

Schedule contact rather than waiting for it. Remote work removes incidental conversation, and nothing replaces it unless you deliberately put something in its place.
