Power Verbs: Better Alternatives to Developed

Developed is the most overloaded verb on the average resume. A synonym for developed is worth finding because the word means three genuinely different things, and the reader cannot tell which one applies.

The three senses

Notice these are not stylistic swaps. Grew the partner channel and Built the partner portal describe entirely different jobs, and Developed the partner channel could be either.

Rewrites

Before: Developed the new onboarding programme.

After: Grew the onboarding programme from four sessions a year to monthly, and trained two colleagues to run it.

Before: Developed reporting for the leadership team.

After: Built the monthly board pack in Excel, replacing three separate spreadsheets.

Each rewrite picks one sense and commits to it. Where two senses genuinely apply, use two clauses rather than one ambiguous verb.

Three worked bullets across fields

Physiotherapist. Coached four newly qualified staff through their first year of caseload management.

Ecommerce manager. Grew the email list from a standing start to a regular revenue channel, at roughly a fifth of paid acquisition cost.

Civil engineer. Drafted the drainage approach for a mixed-use site and took it through planning consultation.

Three fields, three senses, no overlap in phrasing.

When developed is genuinely right

Some work really is gradual, multi-stranded and not reducible to a single act. Developing a curriculum, a research method or a long professional relationship all fit. If the vagueness is an accurate description of slow, compound effort, keep the word and let the rest of the sentence carry the detail.

The test is whether you chose it or defaulted to it. If you cannot say which sense you meant, you defaulted.

Beware the engineering default

In technical fields, Developed is so standard that it stops registering. A page of bullets all beginning Developed reads as a job description rather than a record of what you did. Built, migrated, shipped, instrumented and deprecated all say more, and each implies a different stage of the work.

Whatever you pick, make sure it survives the file. Text trapped in a floating box or a header is often dropped during extraction, the reading-order problem the W3C’s WCAG guidelines address from the accessibility side.
